I get it. Times are tough. The cost of living keeps going up. We all try and save what we can, where we can. This is no exception when it comes to elements of your wedding.
However, it saddens me that today we received an enquiry from a couple who booked and paid for a DJ for their wedding in only a couple of weeks time who haven’t heard a single thing from the cheap DJ. They have tried calling and emailing only to have been ghosted.
They are in a difficult situation. Do they just hope and trust he will turn up, or do they book someone else? They wanted a quote from me to be the “back up” just in case he doesn’t show
up.
Check out this video from ‘A Current Affair’ exposing one of those such DJs (and there are plenty more like him out there) …
Do Your Research
I didn’t ask, nor did they tell me who this DJ was, however I know they wouldn’t have done their research before booking. They got a quote, though it was a great price and now ended up in this situation. Did he just take the money and run? Possibly. Will he show up? Possibly.
These are not the sort of stresses you need when planning a wedding.
By taking the time and reading reviews, checking what others have said as well as asking other vendors if they have heard of them before is critical to avoid becoming a victim.
Ask for their ABN (Australian Business Number) and look it up online to ensure it is legitimate and they are still in business. You can do that for free at this website -> ABN Lookup
Get a Contract
Always, always, ALWAYS get a contract from ANY vendor you are hiring.
This gives you peace of mind they are operating a real business and gives you a written (or digital) piece of evidence should you have to take them to the small claims tribunal.
Weddings are an easy target
Sadly, weddings have been an easy target for dodgy vendors over the years. I have seen far too many couples get fooled by “low prices” only to find themselves rorted out of their hard earned money. These days, every cent counts so people taking your money for an already expensive wedding really hurts.
Quality, reputable suppliers might cost more, but in the long run you can rest easy knowing you are in good hands and won’t be let down.
UPDATE – Taking a break from writing this, I had a coffee and Facebook scrolled only to find yet another couple with the exact same issue. Not hearing anything from their DJ. Possibly the same scam artist that has taken another couple for a ride.
