How to Choose a Wedding DJ

In this article, we are going to look at the level of importance a good wedding DJ has to a wedding and how to choose a wedding DJ. There are a lot of individual elements that come together to create a perfect day, but each element is not of equal importance. Often, this comes down to an individual preference, but I am going to give a view from my perspective and personal experience (having provided our service to over one thousand weddings).

For the majority of couples, it seems they spend 80% of their time with a focus on the ceremony. However, the ceremony only makes up about 20% of the day! It would seem far better if couples spent 80% of their time considering the place they will be spending most of their day … the reception!

When it comes to looking at various aspects that make up the day, each couple will give a different importance weighting to each item. However, nothing can ruin the entire reception (which remember is the majority of your day) than hiring a bad wedding DJ. Having a DJ that is not a professional will give the bridal couple and all the guests a terrible experience.

As I write this article, it was only last week when I was at a wedding where the bride’s dress burst at the back. This was obviously poor dressmaking, and the bride was understandably not happy about it. She has every right to be disappointed by it, but putting it into perspective, when she had it pinned nobody even knew it had burst. Nobody could tell and the rest of the wedding went fantastic. So, yes, the dress is important, but it was not something that was going to ruin the day.

I have been to many weddings where the cake has been either lop-sided, smaller than expected or just didn’t taste as amazing as expected. Again, this is disappointing to any bridal couple, but it has never ruined a night. In perspective, the cake is certainly a highlight, but not a major part of the day.

Even when it comes to meals. I have enjoyed many meals at many venues around Australia at weddings. Some are absolutely amazing, others are quite tasteless and disappointing, however again, the meal is an important part of the day, but as long as it is reasonable and edible it will not ruin the day. Very seldom would any of your guests remember what they ate even a few days after the event.

There are many, many elements to a wedding day, but few can be as memorable or have the power to really give everyone a bad time as can a bad DJ. It is common to hear people saying they went to a wedding where a DJ played the music way too loud, had terrible sounding equipment, turned up late, became drunk, refused to play requested songs … the list goes on. The amount of ways a DJ can ruin an event is incredible.

For the entire time of your reception (expect for speeches) there will be music playing. That means that for 80% of your day, the DJ is responsible for setting the right mood with the music he/she plays. It is extremely important to do your research before hiring a DJ.
