What does the world of theatre and weddings have in common?
More than you may think!
In this article we will be looking at why it is helpful to think of your wedding in terms of a theatrical production. Yes, we know theatre is contrived, even “fake” so how does that equate to a wedding that is “real” and meaningful?
Well for a start, they both have “cast members” with lines to say. From your celebrant to the two of you exchanging vows and promises. Your family members and friends will have planned speeches to make at your reception. As with the world of theatre, practice makes perfect. Your lines will be even more meaningful that the lines of an actor because they are lines about YOU and your partner.
The “stage” is your ceremony, canape area and your reception. You want them to be appealing to the eye so you bring is stylist just as a theatrical production would bring in a props person.
You will likely have flowers, centrepieces for the tables, draping, maybe even an attractive flower wall or fairy light backdrop behind the bridal table.
In theatre, actors wear costumes. Is that much of a stretch from the wedding world with wedding dresses and suits?
In theatre, there is a very much adhered to set of acts. Act I, Act II etc. This is no different to your wedding. The first “Act” will be your ceremony, Act II will be your canape hour, Act III will be the dinner and Act IV will be the opening of the dance floor to open the party.
Music plays an important role in theatre just as it does for your wedding. In fact, about the only two times you WON’T hear music as the soundtrack to your wedding production is while the celebrant is speaking at the ceremony and speeches are being made at your reception.
The one thing the audience expect from a theatrical production is to be entertained.
In fact, I believe that at both a theatre production AND a wedding the guests (your audience) expect they will leave saying that is one of the best events they have ever been to.
This is why you shouldn’t skimp on the entertainment factor for your wedding. A wedding without something to keep your guests entertained will see them making excuses to leave early, leaving you wonder where you went wrong!
